NATIONAL GREEN JOBS STRATEGY A PANACEA TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE IN GHANA

The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Alhaj. Shani Alhassan Shaibu has said that the National Green Jobs Strategy aims not only to preserve and protect the environment but also to create opportunities that will position the nation as a leader in the global fight against climate change

He explained that the Green Jobs Strategy covers all sectors of the economy, including agriculture, manufacturing, energy, construction, tourism, and health.
The Regional Minister made these remarks during a media training and sensitization workshop for some officers from the Northern Regional Coordinating Council and Metropolitan,  Municipal, and District Assemblies on 4th March, 2024 in Tamale.
The National Green Jobs Strategy aims to transform recruitment and employment practices by leveraging Green Technologies, renewable energy, sustainable agricultural practices, and eco-tourism.

The strategy also recognizes the importance of employment practices which prioritize the preservation of flora and fauna in the environment.

He added that this can be achieved through the establishment, promotion, and implementation of green industries, which will contribute to a resilient economy and eliminate harmful practices that degrade our ecosystem.

Hon. Shani emphasized that given the numerous environmental challenges we face today due to poor environmental practices, it is crucial that we collectively embrace the National Green Job Strategy as a catalyst for change and demonstrate our commitment through its adoption.

In read a speech on behalf of the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, madam Jamila Ahmed, Deputy Director   underscored that as a signatory to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Ghana is obligated to take deliberate actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

She mentioned that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) advocates for a "Just Transition to an environmentally sustainable economy," which involves minimizing negative impacts and maximizing job creation opportunities.

Ms. Ahmed indicated that the Ministry of Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions, in collaboration with its partners, has developed the National Green Jobs Strategy, which provides guidance on maximizing job creation within the green economy while promoting environmentally sustainable practices.

She explained that the government believes that creating green jobs is a collective responsibility that requires policy alignment, coordination, green skills development, and support for green enterprises.

The National Project Coordinator of the International Labour Organisation, Mr. Gideon Mankralo, reiterated the need to give people new skills so that they would fit into the Green Economy that protects the environment.

Mr Awudu Damani Musah, Senior Skills development Advisor SNV Ghana, indicated that the SNV ensures people move from Brown to Green Economy which aims at reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.
